Over Half of Independent Artists Believe TikTok is the Most Important Tool for Growth

56% of indie musicians rank TikTok as the best platform to reach new listeners.

The latest survey by global music distribution & artist services company Ditto Music reveals that 56% of independent artists now view TikTok as the most important platform for growing their careers, underscoring the continued dominance of short-form video in music discovery and audience development.

The independent study, which gathered responses from over 2,000 artists and music professionals across Ditto’s global community, underlines how social media has surpassed traditional marketing as the most effective and cost-efficient way to reach listeners beyond their local scene.

When artists were asked which platforms had actually helped move the needle for them, more than half (56%) pointed to TikTok, ranking it significantly ahead of Spotify (16%), Instagram (15%) and YouTube (13%).

Social media marketing was also identified as the single biggest driver of artist growth overall (43%), reinforcing the increasing importance of digital-first strategies in today’s music landscape.

Ditto Music CEO, Matt Parsons, commented on the findings:

“TikTok has completely changed the game for how artists are discovered. What’s interesting is how many songs over the last few years have come directly from the platform. Independent musicians now see it as essential rather than optional. It’s one of the few platforms where a great song can still cut through on its own and find an audience, regardless of budget or industry connections.”

Despite the shift toward digital and social media-led growth, live performance was cited by over a quarter (26%) of artists as their primary method of promotion, reflecting a dual approach in which online platforms drive discovery and reach, while live shows build deeper fan connections and sustain long-term engagement.

The findings sit alongside a broader shift happening across all industries, where short-form videos on social media are becoming a discovery engine. For independent artists especially, TikTok has become a practical place to test out new music, speak directly to fans and build a genuine community of listeners for their music.

As the landscape evolves, Ditto Music remains focused on supporting independent artists and helping them grow on their own terms, turning online momentum into long-term, sustainable careers.
