Creative Burnout at All-Time High: 86% of Artists Report Mental Strain

More artists are experiencing mental strain due to music career pressures.

A new survey by global music distribution & artist services company Ditto Music has revealed a high level of creative burnout among independent musicians, with 86% saying they’ve experienced significant mental strain at some point in their musical careers.

The independent study collected from over 2,000 artists and music professionals within Ditto’s global community highlights the mounting emotional toll the modern music industry has on artists with multiple responsibilities, such as recording, promotion and touring with little respite.

When asked about the key contributors to their stress, 68% of artists pointed to long hours and financial insecurity as some of the big challenges, with 67% saying social media harms their mental well-being. These experiences echo wider findings within the music community, with a previous study from the University of Westminster showing that musicians are 3 times more likely to experience depression and anxiety than the general public.

Ditto Music CEO, Matt Parsons, shared his perspective on the results:

“Being a musician isn’t just about writing songs. It’s about constantly showing up, even when you’re worn out and your creativity is drained. These numbers tell us that mental strain isn’t a rare experience anymore, it’s a shared reality for many who are trying to build a life in music and that needs to change”

Matt Parsons, Ditto Music CEO.

For a lot of independent artists, the stress is compounded by the challenge of balancing creative work with everyday survival. The long-term impact is already being felt. More than half of artists said burnout has caused them to step back from releasing music, with 38% having considered leaving the industry entirely.
